Dicentra spectabilis--Bleeding Heart
Hardiness Zones: 2 to 9
Height: 30 in Spread: 30 in
Type: herbaceous perennial
Flowers: Pink, white (Vis. 1).
Comments: After flowering in early summer, Bleeding Heart
dies down, leaving a gap in the garden. Once the foliage
dies down it can be removed. The plant (Vis. 2) prefers
fertile, light, soils in sun or light shade. Bleeding Heart
prefers ample water in the spring and early summer. A
summer mulch may help keep soil moisture at appropriate
levels. Do not expose the plant to strong wind. Bleeding
Heart may be potted and forced into bloom inside.
Propagation: Bleeding Heart may be divided in spring or
late summer. The roots are brittle so use caution. Seed
may be sown in late summer or early fall and may be
stratified for 6 weeks at 4l degrees or less prior to
planting. Root cuttings 3 inches long can be taken from
large roots after the plant has flowered. Cuttings may be
taken from young shoots soon after they have started
spring growth.
Cultivars:
'Alba' - The flowers are white, otherwise the plant is
similar.
