Cryptomeria japonica--Japanese Cedar

Type: narrow-leaved evergreen tree
Annual Growth Rate: 12 to 18 inches

Comments: Japanese Cedar has ornamental reddish brown bark
that peels off in long strips. The foliage will become
bronzed during the winter but greens up again in spring.
Provide a moist, acid soil and protection from winter
winds. Japanese Cedar will tolerate some shade.

Cultivars:
'Birodo Sugi' - A globe-shaped, compact plant with
purple foliage in winter.
'Cristata' - Bright green cockscombs develop on the
new growth of upright plants.
'Hino Sugi' - A compact, globe shape with bronze
foliage in winter.
'Jindai Sugi' - A dense pyramidal form.
'Kilmacurragh' - A low plant that has small leaf
fasciations.
'Lobbi' - An irregular, upright growth habit. The
foliage is russet in winter.
'Monstrosa' - A vigorous plant with an irregular,
coarse growth habit.
'Monstrosa Nana' ('Mankichi') - A smaller version of
'Monstrosa'.
'Pygmea' - A slow growing dwarf with an upright habit
and nearly horizontal branches.
'Spiralis' - The foliage spirals around the branches.
Round when young but broadly upright with age.
'Spiraliter Falcata' ('Yore Sugi') - Spiral foliage on
branches that twist and curve.
'Sekkan Sugi' - An upright tree with dense, yellow
foliage.
'Tansu' - A small, irregular, pyramidal plant.
'Vilmoriniana' - A dense, rounded dwarf.
'Yoshino' - An upright, columnar tree reaching about 30
feet (Vis. 1).
