Corylus avellana--European Filbert
Hardiness Zones: 4 to 8
Height: 15 ft Spread: 15 ft Form: rounded
Type: deciduous shrub, possibly a small tree
Annual Growth Rate: 12 to 18 inches
Comments: European Filbert prefers a sunny, open location
with any good soil. The plant may occasionally go to 20
feet. The root system is fibrous and suckering and can
spread to form thickets, if not controlled. Drooping
catkins (Vis. 3) are produced in the spring. Usually
present in landscapes in the form of one of its cultivars.
Cultivars:
'Contorta' - Henry Lauders Walking Stick - A large
shrub (Vis. 1)with twisted and contorted stems and
branches (Vis. 2). The leaves are also crinkled. The
rootstock will often send up suckers and overwhelm the
scion, ultimately resulting in a conversion to a large
non-contorted shrub.
'Pendula' - A weeping form.
'Rote Zeller' - The foliage is burgundy at first,
turning bronze. The pinkish colored catkins are
produced in early spring.
