Cornus alba--Tatarian Dogwood

Hardiness Zones: 2 to 7
Height: 8 ft Spread: 7 ft Form: rounded
Type: deciduous shrub
Annual Growth Rate: more than 18 inches
Flowers: White

Comments: Tatarian Dogwood grows in sun or partial shade
and tolerates most soil types. Young shrubs have erect
branches that become more arching with age. The 2-inch
clusters of white flowers are followed by white or bluish-
white fruits. In winter the twigs are bright red (Vis. 6).
Variegated-leaved cultivars are not as vigorous as those
with all green leaves. The shrub resembles Cornus
stolonifera but does not spread as rapidly.

Cultivars:
'Argenteo-marginata' ('Elegantissima') - The winter
twig color is bright red. The leaves are variegated
cream and green (Vis. 1).
'Bailhalo' (Ivory Halo TM)(Plant Patent 8722) - A Bailey
Nursery introduction that has red bark (Vis. 2) in
winter, cream and white leaves but on a more (Vis. 3)
compact plant. The height and spread are about 5 feet.
'Bud's Yellow' - A yellow-stemmed (Vis. 4) selection from
Boughen Nurseries in Saskatchewan.
'Chblzam' (Chief Bloodgood TM) - Faster growing and more
vigorous than the species. The plant will be 6 feet
tall and slightly less in width.
'Crmizam' (Creme de Mint TM) - The leaves are mint green
with white variegations with hints of red and pink in
the fall. The stems are yellow-green. The plant grows
slower than the species.
'Gouchaultii' - The leaf margins are yellow and rose,
the leaf is green and rose becoming partly white on
the margin (Vis. 5). The bark is red in winter.
'Kesselringii' - The red stems become dark purple in
the winter.
'Siberian Pearls' - Large white fruit turn bluish
before falling.
'Sibirica Bloodgood' - Bright, coral-red bark in
winter. The bark color is brighter than that of
other red stemmed dogwood.
'Sibirica Red Gnome' - A compact, low-growing selection
of 'Bloodgood'. The bright red stems are produced in
winter on plants that are about 4 feet tall and wide.
'Sibirica Ruby' - Ruby-red stems in all seasons.
'Stdazam' (Strawberry Daiquiri TM) - The foliage is green
and white throughout the growing season.
