Comments: Japanese Hornbeam is a small tree (Vis. 1) that
develops a red fall color. The fruit bracts are quite
prominent. This member of the genus is not so well known as
C. betulus or C. caroliniana. The bark is smooth and the
branches form a distinctive fan-like pattern.
