11/12/99
Canna x generalis--Canna
Height: to 7 ft Spacing: 18 in
Type: tender bulb, herbaceous perennial in zones 7 to 10
Flowers: Red, pink, yellow, orange (Vis. 1).
Comments: Cannas are large plants (Vis. 2) that do well
during the heat of summer. They may be started indoors but
large pots and lots of space are needed. Some staking may
be necessary as is the removal of dead blooms. The
rootstocks are planted after the soil has warmed. When
the tops are frosted in the fall, cut them back to within
6 to 8 inches, and dig up the rhizomes. Place them in dry
peat and keep them in the dark at temperatures between 45
and 50 degrees.
Propagation: The roots may be divided in the spring with
each division having an eye.
