Arabis caucasica--Wall Rock Cress
Hardiness Zones: 3 to 7
Height: 10 in Spacing: 15 in
Type: herbaceous perennial
Flowers: White
Comments: Rock Cress is a good plant for the rock garden
or as an edging plant. The leaves are silvery and the
flowers are white. Any well-drained soil is suitable
although sandy soil is preferred. The plants may winter
kill on heavy soil and should be given winter protection
in northern areas. Prune back each year after flowering
to encourage compactness and a second bloom.
Propagation: Propagation is by division, cuttings or
seed. Division is done in late summer or spring. Seed is
a slow method to get new plants. The seed germinates in 3
to 4 weeks at 68 degrees. Vigorous clumps can be renewed
by dividing them every 2 or 3 years.
Cultivars:
'Compinkie' - Actually A. x arendsii, a hybrid of A.
aubrietoides and A. causica. The plant has a spreading
habit, bright pink flowers, and leaves tinted with
silver.
'Snow Cap' - The flowers are pure white (Vis. 1).
'Variegata' - Pale yellow leaf variegations.
