Ajuga reptans--Bugleweed

Flowers: Blue, purple

Comments: Ajuga is grown as a ground cover and some
varieties have variegated foliage. Ajuga produces flowers
spikes (Vis. 6) in the spring and grows in sun or light
shade. The soil may be any type if not too dry. The plant
is often used as a ground cover but sometimes becomes a
weed.

Propagation: Division can be done in fall or spring.

Cultivars:
'Atropurpurea' - The foliage is purple, the flowers are
violet.
'Braunherz' - Dark purple foliage, violet flowers.
'Brockbanki' - Green leaves.
'Bronze Beauty' - The bronze foliage is combined with
spikes of blue flowers.
'Burgundy Glow' - The foliage (Vis. 1) is burgundy,
creamy white and green. The flowers are blue.
'Catlin's Giant' - The leaves (Vis. 3) are up to 8 inches
long with blue flowers spikes up to 12 inches (Vis. 2).
'Gaiety' - The foliage is bronze and the flowers are
blue.
'Jungle Beauty Improved' - Dark purple leaves, blue
flowers are produced on stalk 12 inches tall.
'Metallica Crispa' - The foliage is bronze-purple and
the flowers are blue. The foliage color is best in
full sun (Vis. 5).
x 'Mini Crispa Red' - A compact plant with crinkled,
reddish bronze foliage. The flowers are blue.
'Purple Brocade' - The leaves are large and purple with
a silver sheen. The flowers are blue.
'Purple Torch' - Bronzy foliage in the fall. The flowers
are lavender.
'Royalty' - The mature foliage is almost black. The
flowers are blue (Vis. 4).
'Silver Beauty' - The foliage has a white margin, blue
flowers.
