Dicentra eximia--Fringed Bleeding Heart

Hardiness Zones: 4 to 10
Height: 18 in Spread: 8 in
Type: herbaceous perennial
Flowers: Pink, red

Comments: Fringed Bleeding Heart has fern-like foliage and
blooms intermittently through the summer. There are
several varieties with flowers in shades of red or pink.
The plant tolerates full sun if well-watered. This hardy
plant prefers a sandy loam enriched with peat. Fringed
Bleeding Heart self seeds to the point of becoming
overcrowded.

Propagation: The plant may be started from seed or
division. Divide the roots when the foliage dies down in
early autumn. The seed needs to be pre-chilled 3 to 4
weeks before planting and germinates in 6 weeks.

Cultivars: Some of the cultivars listed here are probably
hybrids that involve not only D. eximia but D. formosa and
D. oregona as well.
'King of Hearts' - Dark pink flowers are produced by
plants that form a mound of foliage 8 inches tall.
'Luxuriant' - The flowers are bright red.
'Snowdrift' - Pure white flowers are produced
     throughout the summer.
'Zestful' - Pink flowers are produced throughout the
     summer.
