The Michigan Groundwater Stewardship Program is a statewide project designed to protect groundwater resouces in Michigan. The program is funded by a fee placed on some pesticides and nitrogen fertilizers. It is a cooperation between the Michigan Department of Agriculture, Michigan State University Cooperative Extension, and the local Natural Resource Conservation Districts.
Home*A*Syst is a free booklet provided by the Michigan Groundwater Stewardship Program. This is a take home booklet that a homeowner/apartment renter can complete at their leisure. The booklet includes eight sections which deal with potential hazards to groundwater. The sections include: yard and lawn care, household hazardous waste, household trash, stormwater management, drinking water from wells, and liquid fuel storage. Depending on the water systems in your house some sections may not apply. Any of these activities can potentially contaminate groundwater. Home*A*Syst provides information on how to reduce the risk, if any, that is in your home. Home*A*Syst is simple and makes an immediate impact on one of our most precious natural resource, groundwater. For a copy of Home*A*Syst, a presentation for groups of any age, or a home tour to evalutate your own groundwater pollution prevention practices, contact the MSU Extension office or call Darren Bagley, Gabriel Zawadzki at (810) 244-8527 or send an e-mail to bagleyda@pilot.msu.edu. or zawadzkg@msue.msu.edu. For more information on the national program surf to the National Home*A*Syst/Farm*A*Syst web page.
I can make a presentation to any group on groundwater protection and other groundwater issues. I can design presentations to be suited for adults or children of any age. Neighborhood or block organizations, service clubs, environmental organizations, gardening clubs, outdoor groups, school classes, churches, and any other organizations are welcome. If you or your group is interested in Home*A*Syst or other groundwater presentations, please call Darren Bagley, or Gabriel Zawadzki at (810)244-8527 or e-mail one of us at bagleyda@pilot.msu.edu.or zawadzkg@msue.msu.edu.
