ABOUT THIS BOOKLET
& 4-H RESOURCES
Michigan State University Extension, Genesee County 4-H Youth Program is
committed to providing quality educational resources for all school classrooms
and youth serving agencies. Training programs are also available to all
agency staff, teachers and community volunteers committed to youth development.
This booklet highlights only a few of the educational resources available.

WHAT IS SPACES?
As adults in the 21st Century, today's
young people will encounter a world of change in technology, a need for
problem sloving/ decision making skills, and knowledge of how they share
the world with other people on our planet. SPACES activities are designed
to provide youth with the confidence and skills to meet the challenges
of present and future.
THREE SPACES CONCEPTS!
Inner Space: Develop self-esteem, effective communication, problem
solving and decision making skills.
Outer Space: Discover ways which science and technology influence
our lives today and in the future.
Shared Space: Explore the social and ecological relationships that
exist locally and worldwide.

Getting to Know More About Me!
INTERACTING WITH OTHERS (Grades
3-9)
"Interacting With Others" is a series
of fun activities to encourage kids to think about the different roles
and responsibilities they have now and in the future, the role that friendship
plays in their lives and the kinds of inter-personal skills people need
to communicate with each other.
COPING WITH THE CHANGES IN MY LIFE (Grades 3-9)
"Coping With The Changes In My Life"
helps kids explore many ways to react to the changes in their lives. They
investigate problem solving, decision making, and ways to cope with stress.
They also learn about different approaches they can take to setting goals
and making plans through thirteen group activities.
GETTING TO KNOW MORE ABOUT ME (Grades 3-9)
"Getting To Know More About Me" helps
kids discover more about woh they think they are (self-awareness), how
they value themselves (self-esteem), and how they develop values and ethics.
There are nineteen fun activities.
CREATIVE DRAMA (Grades 3-9)
"Creative Drama" allows teachers/leaders
to guide a group to explore, develop, and communicate ideas, concepts,
and feelings through dramatic enactment. The purpose is to foster personal
growth and to motivate and extend learning in other content areas. The
bulletin includes elementary and secondary level lesson plans. Both levels
are divided into six categories: Sensitivity, Imagination Stimulation,
Pantomime, Dialogue, and Sound Characterizations with Skits & Scenes.
EATING RIGHT IS FUN (Grades 1-6)
"Eating Right Is Fun" is a six lesson
food and nutrition education program available for all youth groups, especially
elementary classrooms. The curriculum involves four lessons, one lesson
a week, one hour per session. The program is conducted by either 4-H staff
or trained community volunteers with a speciality in Food & Nutrition
Education. After completion of the four lessons, youth receive a special
certificate and a graduation ceremony conducted at the school or meeting
site.
FOOD ADVENTURES CURRICULUM
The Food Adventures Curriculum provides fun,
hands-on activities so youth have the opportunity to learn by doing. The
curriculum is a great way to introduce nutrition including shopping, careers,
science, presentation, safety and food preparation.

PEER PLUS II (Grades 9-12)
Peer Plus II is for the person who wants to
know more about themselves and become a more effective communicator. Peer
Plus II is an adventure in learning positive relationships - self and others.
Self-awareness and interpersonal communication skills will enable youth
to build more constructive relationships, resulting in satisfaction for
family, community and career.
KALEIDOSCOPE (Grades K-4)
Kaleidoscope focuses on themes of interest
to 5 to 8 year old kids. All activites are designed to enhance the development
of children through fun, hands-on activities.
"Just Outside the Door" has
several activities that help this age group increase their observation
skills and learn more about themselves. "Family Celebrations From
Around the World" provides a variety of activities designed to help
children learn more about people in our own and other countries.
CHARACTER EDUCATION (K-12)
The 4-H Youth Program can provide a variety
of character education activities that are a lot of fun for participants.
Included in these resources are "Talking With TJ", and CHARACTER
COUNTS!, a service work of the CHARACTER COUNTS! Coalition, a project of
the Josephson Institute of Ethics.
FAMILY FOLKLORE - 4-H FOLKPATTERNS (Grades 6-12)
Folkpatterns is designed for youth who want
to learn more about themselves, their families, and their community. Youth
can collect information on family/community traditions and the booklet
and activity sheets are fun. Examples include: Story Starters, Family Map,
Hidden Stories in Family Photographs, Demonstrating Traditions, and many
more.
FOODWAYS-4-H FOLKPATTERNS PROJECT (Grades 6-12)
Foodways is a Folkpatterns project that develops
an appreciation for the traditional aspects of food in life. Youth will
learn about personal, family, local and regional food related traditions.
"She's a Carrot Top"; Brain Food; Games & Songs; Food Story
Starters; Kitchen Cosmetics; Traditional Holiday Foods... all are small
samples of activities in this project.

Discovering The Explorer In Me
DISCOVERING THE SCIENTIST IN
ME (Grades 3-9)
This series of thirteen fun activities helps
kids think about what science is and isn't, explains how science affects
their lives, helps discover some of the ways scientists solve problems
and conduct research, and imagine what it might be like to be a scientist.
DISCOVERING THE INVENTOR IN ME (Grades 3-9)
"Discovering The Inventor In Me"
encourages kids to think about the ways that different people are inventors,
involves them in designing and marketing new processes and products, and
helps them explore the impact of inventions on their lives. There are twelve
activities.
DISCOVERING THE EXPLORER IN ME (Grades 3-9)
The Explorer unit helps kids develop a sense
of curiosity and wonder, discover different perspectives, face the fear
of failure and the unknown, and create new paths. There are thirteen activities.
BLUE SKY BELOW MY FEET (Grades 4-6)
N.A.S.A. and 4-H join together to explore space
technology and how it relates to life on earth. Three ½ hour video
tapes featuring N.A.S.A. shuttle astronauts, Impulse - the animated satellite
and actual scenes of astronauts in space are utilized to teach about Mission
I: Gravity and Forces, Mission II: Fiber and Fabrics and Mission III: Foods
& Nutrition. Teachers are provided one leader guide, mission manuals
(comic book workbook-one per student), membership cards (one per student),
completion certificates (one per student), and use of the videos.
FOOD MYSTERIES (Grades 4-8)
Food Mysteries will allow youth to become food
detectives by conducting sixteen experiments in five different case studies.
Examples include: The Secret of the Rising Bread, Test Your Taste Buds,
0/2 Secrets and Disappearing Calcium. A leader/teacher guide and completion
certificates (one per student) are available.

SIMILARITIES AND DIFFERENCES
OF THE EARTH'S PEOPLES
(Grades 3-9)
This unit includes six activities to help kids
become aware of and appreciate the differences and similarities among people.
It helps everyone appreciate diversity.
FOOD, SHELTER, AND CLOTHING OF THE EARTH'S PEOPLES
(Grades 3-9)
"Food, Shelter, and Clothing of the Earth's
Peoples" helps kids explore the basic needs of people around the world
- food, shelter, and clothing. There are twelve activities that are a lot
of fun.
LEARNING HOW SPACE IS SHARED (Grades 3-9)
"Learning How Space Is Shared" helps
kids build cooperation, resolve conflicts locally and globally, and understand
the media and the communications technology that makes global sharing possible.
There are twenty-two activities.
OUR COMMON EARTH (Grades 3-9)
"Our Common Earth" helps kids explore
components (building blocks of life), connections (relationships among
components), change (natural and man-made), cycles and energy flow (the
driving forces for recycling components and maintaining life), and common
resources (stewardship of resources that people hold in common). There
are fifteen activities.
AG SCIENCE IN A KIDS WORLD (Grades 3-6)
"Ag Science In a Kids World" contains
twelve activities and experiments designed to teach the importance of agriculture
in today's society. The activities use materials that are easily available.
Each sheet, and the AG SCIENCE IN ACTION Gameboard, may be reproduced for
class use or as a take-home project.
GROUP DYNAMITE (Grades 9-12)
This program is designed for anyone who participates
in a group. The purpose is to provide experiences to develop effective
group skills and be more effective in group interaction. The goal is to
demonstrate how groups operate, how to set group goals, how behavior effects
groups, how to effectively communicate in groups, how groups reach agreements
and make decisions, and how power arises and affects groups.
ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION SERIES (Grades 7-12)
The Environmental Education Series is a group
of bulletins to help youth understand and appreciate the environment. The
titles of the bulletins are: WETLANDS AFFECT YOU AND ME, OUR LIVING ENVIRONMENT,
BASIC SOIL, BASIC WATER, BASIC AIR, BASIC PLANT, BASIC ANIMALS, WILDLIFE
WHERE YOU LIVE, FISHING FOR FUN, GREAT LAKES FISH, IDENTIFYING WILDFLOWERS,
ENTOMOGY.
POCKET PETS (Grades 9-12)
Pocket Pets is a project designed to teach
youth more about the smaller animals (hamsters, gerbils, guinea pigs, rats
and mice). Proper care, feed, parts of the animal's body, housing, and
handling are just a few areas that are covered.
SOLID WASTE AWARENESS IN THE CLASSROOM (Grades K-12)
This extension bulletin was funded by the "Clean
Michigan Fund Project" of the Michigan Department of Natural Resources.
The program contains several activities for several grade levels to develop
awareness about our solid waste problems.
ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT POWER - WASTE
MANAGEMENT CURRICULUM (Grades 6-9)
The Environmental Management Power Curriculum
is a 4-H project developed through a grant from the United States Department
of Energy and was purchased from the University of Idaho Cooperative Extension.
This is a great way to introduce waste management to youth.
CHARACTER EDUCATION (Variety of grades)
Michigan State University, through the 4-H Youth
Development Program, can provide a variety of character development materials
including CHARACTER COUNTS!, a service mark of the CHARACTER COUNTS! Coalition,
a project of the Josephson Institute of Ethics.
WHAT ABOUT
ADULTS YOU ASK?
TRAINING OPPORTUNITIES (Adults)
Michigan State University Extension, 4-H Youth
Programs provides several training opportunities for adults and older youth
that work with kids.
_ Local workshops
_ State level workshops: This includes Kettunen Center, near Cadillac which
is a beautiful state 4-H leader training facility. Topics revolve around
a number of youth development issues. The facility offers these two and
three day workshops for around $30.00. This includes registration, lodging
and meals. Contact us for a list of topics.
_ Satellite Conferences allow us to stay up to date on a large number of
issues from early brain development to national prevention programs.
HELP ME, I'M GROWING UP (Adults)
This is a curriculum intended for all adults
that work with early adolescents (ages 9-15). The activities are interactive,
fun and educational. Adults take a trip back to when they were this age
and do a little exploring. Categories include Primary Changes of Early
Adolescents, The World of Early Adolescents, Important Developmental Jobs
of Early Adolescents, and Kids Who Experience Problems.
YOUTH VOLUNTEER CORP
The 4-H Youth Program provides the opportunity
for youth in schools and other agencies to create a Youth Volunteer Corp.
The YVC involves youth in community issues identification and engages them
in meaningful community service/service learning activities. Youth become
a part of the solution, not a part of the problem.
