Cranberries
Michigan has almost 250 acres of cranberries. There are several small cranberry farms in the Upper Peninsula and one large new planting in Cheboygan County in the Northeastern Lower Peninsula. All the rest are recent cranberry plantings in the 5 counties on the Southern Lake Michigan Shore. Cranberries are members of the heath family. They are related to Blueberries and have similar site requirements. While there is interest in new cranberry plantings, the high cost of site preparation has kept most ventures in Michigan small.
The Michigan Cranberry Team
Mark Longstroth is
the lead MSUE extension agent for cranberries in Michigan. Dr. Eric Hanson is MSU's horticultural specialist in small
fruit. Dr. Annemick Schilder is the small fruit
extension pathologist. Dr. Rufus Isaacs is the small
fruit entomology extension specialist. The Blueberry and
Cranberry subcommittee directs the cranberry extension effort in Michigan.
