MSUE Food Safety Programs
Food and Nutrition Information Resource Center
This center provides support for state and county extension staff persons
in the areas of food, nutrition and health. Food safety materials are developed,
reviewed and disseminated to extension staff and consumers through the
center. Professional staff receive support and training through a

Food Safety and Quality National Initiative (FSQI)
The FSQI is a USDA-Cooperative State Research, Education, and Extension
Service (CSREES) program that supports the development and dissemination
of food safety educational materials by land-grant colleges and universities.
The MSU Extension FSQI program provides partial support for a variety of
food safety educational activities. The 1996 Michigan Food Safety Impacts
20,193 program participants, and 62 percent of participants reported increased
knowledge of food safety issues.
Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program
Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program (EFNEP) is a food and
nutrition education program designed to help low-income families with children
improve the adequacy of their daily diets through increased knowledge and
skills. EFNEP is currently in its 28th year in Michigan and is available
to residents in 16 counties. The program provided in-home education to
5,883 Michigan families in 1996. The curriculum Eating Right Is Basic is
used in more than 30 states.
Family Nutrition Program (FNP)
FNP is a food and nutrition program for persons eligible for or receiving
food stamps. FNP provides education in nutrition, food selection and budgeting,
and food safety and sanitation. FNP is completing its fourth year in Michigan
and is available in all 83 counties. The curriculum is Eating Right Is
Basic (Third Edition). FNP Participants in 1995 to 1996 numbered 214,452
direct contacts through home visits, group sessions, demonstrations, newsletters,
etc.
MSU Annual Food and Nutrition Conference
The Annual Food and Nutrition Conference is held each year during Agriculture
and Natural Resources Week on the MSU campus. Conference presentations
usually cover cutting edge topics in food, nutrition, and health (including
food safety). The 25th Annual Nutrition Conference will be held on March
11, 1998. The March 1997 conference included 700 participants.
Operation RISK (Reducing the Incidence of Sick
Kids)
The Operation RISK curriculum teaches the how’s and why’s of safe food
handling to children. Through Operation RISK, kids explore ways to ensure
their own health by learning what they can do to prevent foodborne illness.
Kids assume the role of detectives as they work through this multimedia
program, complete with fun to solve cases and missions to complete at home
with an adult. Learning activities are designed to challenge young problem
solvers and help them make decisions and adopt practices that will protect
their health.
Team Nutrition
The Michigan Team Nutrition program is part of the USDA’s Team Nutrition
network of public and private partnerships that promote food choices for
a healthy diet through the media, schools, families, and the community.
USDA’s Team Nutrition supports the new policy updating school meals nutrition
standards to reflect the Dietary Guidelines for Americans. The Michigan
Team Nutrition Steering Committee is co-chaired by staff from MSU Extension
and the State of Michigan Department of Education Child Nutrition Program.
