The Skinny on Fat

Is fat in the diet all bad?

No.

Fat is important for proper development in young children.  In fact, human milk is 55% fat and is considered superior to formula for child development.  The American Academy of Pediatrics, the American Heart Association, and the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute all recommend that dietary fat intake should not be limited for individuals less than 2 years old. Other researchers suggest that fat intake should not be limited until after the age of 5.  That means that young children should probably drink whole milk instead of skim or low fat.

As children get older they should follow a good balanced diet including some fat.  Follow the food guide pyramid to maintain a balanced healthy diet.

If you are concerned about your fat intake you can always substitute skim milk for 2% or whole milk.  Skim milk has all the vitamins and minerals of whole milk with none of the fat.

Even on a diet, it's important to get three glasses of milk a day for the vitamins and minerals your body needs.
