Scholarship Opportunities

4-H involvement leads young people to explore various career and educational options after high school.  For those who choose to further their education, Michigan State University, Michigan 4-H Youth Development and the Michigan 4-H Foundation offer scholarships to help support these educational goals.


General Eligibility:

  • 4-H involvement at county, regional, state, national and international levels.
  • Outstanding achievement in 4-H.
  • Scholastic excellence.
  • Broad range of 4-H experiences and project involvement.
  • Leadership and citizenship contributions within and outside of 4-H.
  • Financial need (applies to 4-H Rabbit/Cavy, Schunk Memorial 4-H Beef, and Michigan Farm and Garden Association scholarships only).

Michigan 4-H Youth Development Scholarships

Note: The following deadline applies to the Alpha Gamma Rho 4-H Scholarship, the Michigan Farm & Garden Association 4-H Scholarship, the Michigan Rabbit/Cavy 4-H Scholarship and the John J. Schunk Memorial 4-H Beef Scholarship. Applicants may apply for one or more of these Michigan 4-H Scholarships using the application packet provided below.
Deadline: December 1, 2007

Alpha Gamma Rho (AGR) 4-H Scholarship
Award amount: $400 (one offered annually)
Who can apply: High school seniors who will be college freshman in Fall 2008 or current MSU undergraduate students who have completed at least one year in the 4-H program.
Additional eligibility requirements: None
What college/major it’s for: Must be pursuing a degree/career in the food, fiber and life sciences industry. (Any major at Michigan State University, in the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources as well as related college majors such as chemical or biological engineering, zoology, physiology, environmental sciences, veterinary medicine, packaging, etc.)

Michigan Farm & Garden Association 4-H Scholarship
Award amount: Range in value from $360 to $1,000 (number awarded varies annually)
Who can apply: High school seniors who will be college freshmen in fall 2008 or any current undergraduate college student (freshman, sophomore, junior or senior).
Additional eligibility requirements: Have financial need.
What college/major it’s for: Be enrolled in a college program in the areas of horticulture, floriculture, conservation, forestry, aquatic ecology, child and family studies, food and nutritional science, textiles and design, or in any other closely related area of study.

Michigan Rabbit/Cavy 4-H Scholarship
Award amount: $400-$500 (4 annually)
Who can apply: Those who will be college freshman in the Fall of 2008.
Additional eligibility requirements: For youth who have been enrolled in a 4-H rabbit or cavy project for three or more years and have financial need.
What college/major it’s for: Any college or university and any major.

John J. Schunk Memorial 4-H Beef Scholarship
Award amount: $1000 (one offered annually)
Who can apply: College freshman in the Fall 2008
Additional eligibility requirements: Have been enrolled in a 4-H beef project for 3 or more years and have financial need.
What college/major it’s for: Any college or university and any major.

Michigan State University Scholarships

Michigan State University 4-H Scholarship
Award amount: One-quarter of the annual tuition for four consecutive years of full-time study at MSU. Six scholarships given annually.
Who can apply: 4-H Members who are high school seniors must apply to MSU and submit the MSU 4-H Scholarship Application by November 1 of their senior year.
Additional eligibility requirements: Applicants must meet the standard admissions requirements of the university and be accepted to MSU.
What college/major it’s for: Any Michigan State University four-year degree-granting program.

Michigan State University 8th Grade Pre-College Scholarship
Award amount: $2000 (Applied toward the student’s first year at MSU as a degree-seeking student. Scholarship recipients are not guaranteed admission to MSU and must meet admission requirements upon submitting the MSU application following their junior year of high school.)
Who can apply: 8th graders who have attended an MSU pre-college program (such as 4-H Exploration Days or 4-H Great Lakes & Natural Resources Camp) the summer prior to entering 8th grade.
Additional eligibility information: This is a competitive application process for 8th graders from all of MSU’s pre-college programs. Each MSU Extension county is limited to no more than three nominees from their 4-H Exploration Days participants because of the large number of eligible students. Must complete the MSU 8th Grade Pre-College Scholarship Application Packet in it’s entirety by the specified deadlines.
What college/major it’s for: Michigan State University – all degree granting majors accepted.

December 7, 2007 (forms to MSU 4-H Youth Development office)

Michigan 4-H Foundation Scholarships

The Michigan 4-H Foundation offers MSU 4-H scholarship awards to attend Michigan State University. There is no separate application process for these awards – recipients are selected from the MSU 4-H and Michigan 4-H Youth Development Scholarship applicant pools.


Funding 4-H Youth Development Scholarships

Contact the Michigan 4-H Foundation if you would like to help support 4-H youth in their pursuit of a college education. There are various ways you can make a gift to create a 4-H scholarship fund.
