About the Michigan 4-H Safety Belt Program
“I had a friend who was like a brother to me . . . I got a call from his mom one night at 3 a.m. ‘[He] got in a car accident, and they don’t know if he’ll make it.’ She put the phone up to his ear and I said goodbye. His death happened because he wasn’t wearing his seatbelt. He took his eyes off the road for just a second . . . I know what it feels like to lose someone that’s close for something that’s really stupid. It’s really stupid to not wear your seatbelt. It takes just a second to put it on, and it could save your life.”
– Safety Belt Program teen educator
The Michigan 4-H Safety Belt Program aims to increase safety belt use and awareness among teen and youth participants. Using a variety of educational activities, teen educators teach kids and other teens about the importance of buckling their safety belts. Read more about the efforts these teen educators are making to influence kids and their communities, while developing their own skills in driving and career preparation in the article "Teen educators advise young people to 'Take a Second, Save a Lifetime.'"
