Visual Letters: The Art of Michigan Children

“Once my paintings get started...they take on a life of their own, and often that’s the way things take place. They come from a mysterious place within.”
- Jaune Quick-to-See Smith*

There are 60 pieces of children's art from 13 Michigan counties in this exhibit. Each child has created a drawing or painting that reveals something important in his or her life.

Children’s artwork seems to come from “a mysterious place within.” This is both its charm and power. Enjoying the 4th of July is an explosion of sparkle and joy. Bigfoot looks fearsome, yet his world is full of bright colors, flowers and the sun. The remaining pieces of art also ask the viewer to linger and look at the stories and feelings told through art by children.

The artwork in this exhibit was selected from hundreds of paintings and drawings created by children from all over Michigan for the 2002 4-H Michigan Children’s Art Exchange with the People’s Republic of China.
Each year children in kindergarten to sixth grade, in formal and nonformal educational settings, are invited to participate in this global art experience.
