4-H FOLKPATTERNS — A Cultural Heritage Project

If you're interested in traditions, history, traditional crafts, foods or your own heritage, the 4-H FOLKPATTERNS program is for you! Help kids discover the traditions in their lives and in the lives of others. Connect kids with tradition-bearers in their own communities. Explore stories and customs of family members. Grow a heritage garden. Learn a folk dance. Collect weather lore. Study the art of gravestone symbols. Research your family tree. Hold an ethnic dinner. Discover how culturally diverse every community is.

Learning Materials

More information on learning materials available to support these activities can be found in the Michigan Guide to 4-H or through the MSU Bulletin Office.

Additional information is available on the MSU Museum's FOLKPATTERNS web site.

4-H FOLKPATTERNS publications include:

  • Foodways: A 4-H FOLKPATTERNS Project (4-H 1329)
This publication explores the history and folklore of food. Some of the activities included can be done by one person; others can be done in a group. The booklet introduces foodways, identifies foodways that could be explored as a 4-H FOLKPATTERNS project and includes activities.
  • Family Folklore: A 4-H FOLKPATTERNS Project (4-H 1330)
Family folklore is the way a family captures its experiences and keeps its past alive. This project guide explores five forms of family folklore: stories, expressions, photographs, customs and keepsakes. The guide includes many activities for members to complete.
  • FOLKPATTERNS 4-H Leader's Guide (4-H 1506)
This leader's guide includes information that volunteers need to know to lead a FOLKPATTERNS 4-H project. It also includes 12 sample meeting plans that cover the four areas of FOLKPATTERNS exploration: "Discovering FOLKPATTERNS," "Discovering My Own Traditions," "Discovering My Family Traditions" and "Discovering Traditions in My Community and Beyond."

Additional Publications:

  • Michigan Barn and Farmstead Survey Manual
  • Training & Events

For upcoming training and events in this area, check the 4-H Volunteer Workshops web site, the MSU Extension Calendar and the 4-H Exploration Days web site.
