Information & Opportunities for 4-H Youth, Volunteers & Staff

M4-HYCC Group At CapitolThere are many ways to get involved in Michigan 4-H citizenship, leadership and service activities. Contact your county 4-H office to find out what is happening locally. On this page you will find trainings, Web sites and other information to help you get more involved. Civic engagement means to learn and practice what you have learned at the local, state and national level. 4-H and other youth organizations provide many ways to do so. Discover how! (Information will change periodically.)

  • Giving to 4-H Citizenship, Leadership and Service ProgramsPromote civic action, respect of differences and life skills with educational opportunities for youth aged 5 to 19. These programs demonstrate to young people how their actions today can make a difference in how their government and their communities function. This can only happen when individuals, businesses and groups give of their time, talent and treasures. Find out how you can donate funding to get more young people involved. The following brochure can help you and others raise funds for these statewide programs. Use it when you make presentations at other civic organizations, like your local Lions or Kiwanis Club, in order to seek additional funding for these needed 4-H Citizenship, Leadership, & Service programs and activities.
  • Preparing Youth to be Citizens in the 21st Century Workshop: Citizenship, Character and Ethics Training– Held at Michigan State University in March, this one-day training is open to students and adults interested in a more academic approach to the subject. Speakers will include both faculty and community members. Opportunities will be given to explore how to use this information in youth programming. (Registration and an information sheet and registration form available in MS Word format.)
  • Citizenship, Leadership & Service Promotional Bookmarks – The following bookmarks can be passed out at workshops and sessions. Not just for young people who are involved in citizenship, leadership and service activities, they can be used in all project areas.
  • The Michigan 4-H Youth Conservation Council – Michigan 4-H Youth Conservation Council (M4-HYCC) helps Michigan teens who are interested in current environmental issues become involved with state and local governments to help resolve those issues. Annually, a new council is chosen and consists of 25 teens aged 13 to 19. To receive an application and information packet, contact your county MSU Extension office.
  • Michigan Community Service Commission – The Michigan Community Service Commission (MCSC) builds a culture of service by providing vision and resources to strengthen communities through volunteerism. MCSC administers the Michigan’s AmeriCorps, Learn and Serve - Michigan, Mentor Michigan, Michigan’s Training and Technical Assistance, Inclusion Project and Michigan's Volunteer Investment Grants.
  • Youth Service America - (YSA) – Youth Service America (YSA) is a resource center that partners with thousands of organizations committed to increasing the quality and quantity of volunteer opportunities for young people, aged 5 to 25, to serve locally, nationally and globally. Founded in 1986, YSA's mission is to strengthen the effectiveness, sustainability and scale of the youth service and service-learning fields.
