Educational Resources
4-H Youth Development develops educational resources to help volunteers and staff work with young people in clubs and groups, as individuals and as teen leaders. These citizenship, leadership and service activities and resources can be used alone or added to a meeting or workshop. More information is added all of the time, so check back to see if anything new has been added.
- Youth Experiencing Action! (YEA!) (4-H 1553) — YEA is a 4-H curriculum for young people aged 14 to 19 that also can be adapted to middle school. YEA activities may be used by any youth group interested in using experiential learning and community-based service learning activities in their program.
- Group Dynamite Notebook (4-H 1068) — The Group Dynamite Notebook offers activities designed to increase the group process skills of teens and adults. Participants learn problem-solving, decision-making and personal management skills in a group setting. Leadership skills and group dynamics are also a focus of the experiential learning format.
- Community Service Materials — Start with the list of more than 250 community service activities, share ideas on how to start a service project and find out ways to recognize youth for service. Special activities for 5- to 8-year-olds are included in this section.
- 4-H Teen Leadership Web site — Annually, more than 5,000 teens are registered as 4-H teen leaders. Find out how 4-H teen leadership is defined, what to do as a teen leader and a whole lot more. New in 2006.
- Citizenship - Public Adventures Curriculum — A National 4-H curriculum designed to channel youth’s energy toward solving real problems in their community. Youth change a piece of the public world, discover the possibilities of democratic citizenship and build a commitment to taking action in new and exciting ways. They plan and conduct a project that will create, change, or improve something that is valuable to many people. Grades 6 – 8.
- Step Up To Leadership Curriculum — This National 4-H curriculum includes several booklets that encourage youth of all ages to share in the fun as they learn the dynamic process of leadership. Mentor guides include background information, interactive activities and real life experiences in relationship building, communication, group process, and planning and organizing. All activities offer a cross-cultural perspective. Young children and teens can lead in many ways — at home, in clubs, youth groups, school and the community. The fun continues with an interactive Web site to enhance and support learning. Grades K-12.
- Youth Leadership Institute Notebook — Available through the Michigan 4-H Mall, the focus of the Youth Leadership Institute Notebook is to provide you with learning activities and ideas to develop the leadership life skills of youth who are in 8th and 9th grades, ranging in age from 13 to 15 years. The Institute is intended for youth who have not been involved in a leadership role but have the potential to be a leader.
- Citizenship, Leadership & Service Promotional Bookmarks –- The following bookmarks can be passed out at workshops and sessions. Not just for young people who are involved in citizenship, leadership and service activities, they can be used in all project areas.
More information on learning materials available to support Citizenship, Leadership and Service activities can be found in the Michigan Guide to 4-H or through the MSU Bulletin Office.
