Citizenship, Leadership & Service

4-H Youth County Exchange Programs

"Youth recognize, understand and appreciate diversity and multiculturalism. Youth grow and contribute as active citizens through service and leadership."

—Michigan 4-H Youth Development Guiding Principles

4-H Youth County Exchange Programs are a great way for young people to learn about themselves and others, practice a lot of life skills (such as how to manage money) and are a way to travel and meet new people. Exchange participants host others from another county or state, meet new friends and learn that we are all alike in some ways. Many counties have exchanges. You can find out if one is offered in your area by contacting your county MSU Extension office.

A resource for Extension staff members and 4-H volunteers to use in coordinating 4-H interstate and intrastate exchanges—club to club, county to county, state to state—is the 4-H Youth County Exchange Programs Guide (available for download in Adobe Acrobat PDF format).  This guide has ideas on what to expect and how to plan a successful experience.

North Carolina State University hosts a site that posts out-of-state exchange opportunities. Go to http://exchanges.ces.ncsu.edu/ to view locations or post an ad to advertise your county’s interest in going on a 4-H Youth County Exchange.

Planning and carrying out a trip is a lot of fun, however, it will go much better if thoughtful preparation is a part of the plans. The educational pieces of the program, trip management and risk and safety factors are all components to consider. As your team of teens and adults starts to plan, keep in mind the vision, mission and guiding principles of Michigan 4-H Youth Development and incorporate these into the trip.

Let the exchange begin!
