4-H Events and Workshops

The following is a list of state and regional 4-H events scheduled from October 2009 to August 2010. More events will be added as information becomes available. Check with your county 4-H staff for your county registration deadlines and other details.

October 2009

  • Michigan 4-H Youth Conservation Council (M4-HYCC). This is an environmental youth leadership opportunity for youth ages 13 to 19 interested in natural resources, environmental problems, and/or politics. Application deadline for youth and adult advisors: October 2 to county 4-H staff. County staff completes their section and submits it to the M4-HYCC coordinator by October 9.   • Buckskin Congress. October 2-4 at the MSU Pavilion.
  • MI Fall Angus Sale. October 3 at the MSU Pavilion.
  • Fall Horse Galaxy for 4-H Horse Programming Committees. October 9–10 at the Kettunen Center. This workshop gives volunteers a chance to learn about new resources, collaborate with representatives from different counties, plan upcoming state 4-H horse events, discuss guidelines for the state 4-H horse program, and gain leadership and youth development skills. Open only to adult and teen state 4-H horse event planning committee members (invitation only). For more information or to register for a 4-H workshop, contact your county MSU Extension office.
  • Livestock Judging Contest. October 11 at the MSU Pavilion.
  • MGL Draft Horse Show & Pull. October 1518 at the MSU Pavilion.
  • 4-H Clothing and Textile Workshop. October 17–18 at the Kettunen Center. Explore new project ideas and skills to use in your 4-H clothing and textiles programs. Sessions include beginning sewing skills, several quilt classes, projects for 5- to 8-year-olds, wool felting, knitting, creative bags, community service projects, a special teen class and more. Open to adult and teen volunteers aged 13 and up. For more information or to register for a 4-H workshop, contact your county MSU Extension office.
  • N. Paint Horse Show. October 22–25 at the MSU Pavilion.
  • MPHC Fall Color Classic. October 23–25 at the MSU Pavilion.
  • 4-H Crafts, Visual Arts and Performing Arts Workshop. October 24–25 at the Kettunen Center. Sessions will include cartooning, fused glass jewelry, basket making, paper quilling, decorative gourds, mosaic garden fish, bag-it with brown bags, scrapbooking, portrait and landscape photography, magic, musical theatre, clowning for everyone, set the stage and creative music making. Open to adult and teen volunteers aged 13 and up. For more information or to register for a 4-H workshop, contact your county MSU Extension office.
  • 4-H Proud Equestrian Program Instructor Update. October 24–25 at the Kellogg Biological Station. This workshop provides continuing education for current 4-H Proud Equestrian Program (PEP) certified instructors and will cover topics related to instructing therapeutic riding, working with youth with special needs, horse management and care. Open to 4-H PEP instructors and instructors in training. Also open to NARHA-certified instructors and those with an interest in therapeutic riding.   • MHSA Horse Show. October 30–November 1 at the MSU Pavilion.

November 2009

  • MHSA Horse Show. November 1 at the MSU Pavilion.
  • Natural Helpers Leader Training. November 6 at the MSU Extension office, Isabella County. Learn how you can become a Natural Helpers® trainer. Natural Helpers is a peer-helping program that seeks to provide training and support to those who are already serving as helpers. Open to adult staff and volunteers from any youth-serving organization or school. Cost is $50. For more information or to register for a 4-H workshop, contact your county MSU Extension office.
  • MSU Fall Fest Cattle Sale. November 6–7 at the MSU Pavilion.
  • S. MI Paint/QH Sale. November 6–8 at the MSU Pavilion.
  • Autumn Showcase Polled Hereford Show. November 8 at the MSU Pavilion.
  • 4-H Rabbit and Cavy Teen and Adult Volunteer Leader Workshop. November 13–14 at the Kettunen Center. Gain new ideas and information about the 4-H rabbit and cavy project areas by choosing from a variety of learning opportunities including management, health, nutrition, breeding, animal evalutation, crafts, games, showmanship and fun activities.   • MQHA Harvest Classic. November 13–15 at the MSU Pavilion.
  • Autumn Fest. November 20–21 at the MSU Pavilion.
  • 4-H Adult Horse Leaders Conference. November 21–22 at the Kettunen Center. Topics covered will include updates on current subject matter in the horse area and information to help volunteers in youth development, leadership skill development for youth, youth activities and opportunities beyond a county program.   • Model Train Show. November 22 at the MSU Pavilion.
  • MSUHA Horse Show. November 22 at the MSU Pavilion.
  • IKC Club Dog Show. November 26–29 at the MSU Pavilion.
  • Michigan State University 4-H Scholarship. Michigan 4-H’ers who are current high school seniors and apply as freshman for a four-year degree program at Michigan State University are eligible to apply for the MSU 4-H Scholarship. The scholarship provides $2,500 annually renewable for four years of undergraduate full-time enrollment at MSU (a $10,000 value). Six recipients are selected annually based on 4-H involvement, achievements, leadership, service and academic excellence. The application form is available at http://web1.msue.msu.edu/4h/scholar.html. Applicants must apply for MSU admission by November 1 and submit their MSU 4-H scholarship application to their local county MSU Extension office 4-H staff by mid-October. County 4-H educators complete the staff section and forward it to MSU Admissions by November 1. Alternates to the MSU 4-H Scholarship are considered for other scholarship awards thanks to the generosity of donors to the Michigan 4-H Foundation. Selections for MSU 4-H Scholarships and Michigan 4-H Foundation Scholarships are determined by Spring 2010.
  • Eighth-graders Pre-college Achievement Scholarship. Eight-graders who attended a 2009 MSU pre-college summer program such as Exploration Days or Great Lakes and Natural Resources (GLNR) Camp can apply for the $2,000 Pre-college Achievement Scholarship (PAS). The PAS will be applied toward the student’s first year at MSU as a degree-seeking student. (Scholarship recipients are not guaranteed admission to MSU and are expected to meet admission requirements upon MSU application.) The anticipated application deadline is December 1 with all paperwork due to the county MSU Extension office by November 15.   • MHA. January 7–9 at the MSU Pavilion.
  • 4-H Horse Show Judges & Show Managers Conference. January 8–10 at the Kettunen Center. This conference is designed to help participants improve cooperation between 4-H horse show superintendents and judges, increase the quality of horse show management techniques and learn creative and innovative methods for making horse shows more educational for youth. It provides judges with updates in riding styles, class scoring, breed differences in events and techniques for becoming better communicators with managers and youth exhibitors. Open to Michigan 4-H Horse regular and conditional judges, Extension staff, 4-H horse judges advisory committee members, State 4-H Horse Show committee members and horse superintendents and representatives from Michigan counties.   • Spartan Mid-winter Dog Match. January 10 at the MSU Pavilion.
  • Winter Tournament Show. January 16 at the MSU Pavilion.
  • MSU Equestrian & Polo Match. January 16–17 at the MSU Pavilion.
  • 4-H Teen Citizen, Leadership & Service Conference. January 23–24 at the Kettunen Center. Teens will learn the leadership and civic engagement skills they need to make a difference in their communities. Sessions available for both 4-H and non-4-H young people.   • 4-H Veterinary Science Teen & Adult Volunteer Leader Workshop. February 26–27 at the Kettunen Center. Explore animal systems and learn about animal health for a broad array of species by sharing information and experiences, asking questions and quizzing veterinarians about their skills. Participate in hands-on demonstrations that teach you how to help members recognize healthy, sick or injured animals. Open to adult and teen volunteers aged 13 and up.   • South Michigan Paint and Quarter Horse Sale. February 26–28 at the MSU Pavilion.
  • 4-H Beef, Sheep & Swine Teen & Adult Volunteer Leader Workshop. February 27–28 at the Kettunen Center. You’ll learn about animal health, management, care and nutrition; sharpen your livestock judging and evaluation skills and enhance you communication and teaching skills. Learn about the many opportunities available for those interested in beef, sheep or swine projects. Open to adult and teen volunteers aged 13 up. March 2010

  • Agriculture & Natural Resources (ANR) Week. March 5–13 on the Michigan State University Campus. ANR Week provides seminars and workshops on a variety of topics in areas such as agriculture, horticulture and natural resources. Open to all.   • 4-H Poultry Teen & Adult Leader Workshop. Originally scheduled for March 6–7 2010 has been POSTPONED until October 30-31, 2010 at the Kettunen Center. Choose from a variety of learning opportunities including health, nutrition, showmanship, fitting, live bird and carcass evaluation, management, incubation and hatchery, pigeons, skill-a-thon and quiz bowl, beginning a poultry project, youth leadership, crafts, games and more.   • Stallion Expo. March 12–14 at the MSU Pavilion.
  • 4-H Environmental & Outdoor Education Adult & Teen Volunteer Leader Training Workshop. March 19–21 at the Kettunen Center. Gain ideas, project resources and activities to help kids enjoy the outdoors and care for the environment. Open to adult and teen volunteers aged 13 and up. Cost is $65 for 4-H volunteers and current 4-H members. Registration deadline: March 5.   • 4-H Plant Science and Entomology. March 19–21 at the Kettunen Center. This is a hands-on opportunity to explore many horticulture and entomology projects through games, crafts, science applications and career exploration. Open to adults and teens aged 13 and up.   • 4-H Capitol Experience. March 21–24 in Lansing, Michigan. This MSU pre-college program explores civic engagement and public policy. Discover a citizen’s role in the state government, network with other students, explore new careers and more. Open to high school students and adult chaperones. Cost: $275 for adults and current 4-H members; $285 for those not in 4-H. Application deadline is February 6 for submitting all materials to your county MSU Extension 4-H office.   • National 4-H Conference. March 20–25 in Chevy Chase, Maryland. This is the premier 4-H leadership conference open to teens 15–19. Teen delegates are selected through an application process. For more information visit http://4hconf.4-h.org/.
  • MI Dairy Show and Sale. March 26–27 at the MSU Pavilion.

April 2010

  • MQHYA Easter Extravaganza. April 1–4 at the MSU Pavilion.
  • MCA Beef Expo. April 9–11 at the MSU Pavilion.
  • State 4-H Horse Jamboree. April 10–17 at the MSU Pavilion.
  • Michigan FFA Ag Skills Contest. April 16 at the MSU Pavilion. Open to FFA and 4-H members. Spectators welcome. Contact state FFA office at 517-353-9221 for details.
  • Michigan 4-H Dairy Conference. April 16–18 at the Bayshore Camp. You’ll learn about dairy management topics including dairy cattle nutrition, health, reproduction and cattle evaluation. Open to youth aged 13 to 19.
  • Llama Show. April 17 at the MSU Pavilion.
  • Small Animals Day. April 17 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the MSU Pavilion. Open to all. Admission $2. Contact MSU College of Agriculture and Natural Resources at 517-355-9575 for details.

  • B&B Judging Contest. April 18 at the MSU Pavilion.
  • 4-H Shooting Sports Trainer Workshop. April 22–25 at the Kettunen Center. This workshop will give experienced 4-H shooting sports instructors the chance to develop and improve their skills in facilitating Michigan 4-H shooting sports workshops for adult and teen volunteer leaders. Workshop topics include best practices in youth and adult education, implementing 4-H goals and policies and effective workshop facilitation skills.   • 4-H Shooting Sports Instructor Workshop. April 23–25 at the Kettunen Center. Choose one of several disciplines offered at this workshop as a first step in becoming certified as a Michigan 4-H shooting sports instructor. Disciplines offered will include riflery, shotgun, archery, hunting and wildlife. Participants must be at least 16 to enroll in the training series, and at least 21 to become a certified 4-H Outdoor Adventure Challenge leader. Cost: Adults pay $235 total with $100 deposit due at time of application; youth (16 to 20) pay $135 with $100 deposit due at time of application. Registration deadline is April 12. May 2010

  • 4-H Companion Animal Teen and Adult Leader Workshop. May 15–16 at the Kettunen Center. Learn about 4-H companion animal activities, club and group development, leadership opportunities and canine behavior. Learn how to improve both beginning and advanced skills in performance areas such as agility, obedience, showmanship, rally and freestyle. Open to 4-H adult and teen volunteer leaders aged 13 and up. June 2010

  • 4-H Exploration Days. June 23–25 at Michigan State University. This MSU pre-college program gives young people a chance to experience college life, learn new ideas and skills, and meet people from across Michigan. Open to youth aged 11 and up and adult chaperones. Cost: 2010 price TBA (2009 cost was $165 for current 4-H members; $175 for those not in 4-H). Registration deadline May 3. Registration book will be available online at http://web1.msue.msu.edu/4h/expodays.html and from county MSU Extension office by mid-March.
  • Michigan 4-H Awards Assembly. June 23–24 at Michigan State University. Regional 4-H winners compete for state-level honors in a specified 4-H project area. Open to State 4-H award nominees aged 13 and up. Registration deadline: May 1. Find out more at http://web1.msue.msu.edu/4h/staward.html.

July 2010

  • 4-H Learning Science Through the Arts Youth Camp. July 11–14 at the Kettunen Center.The camp program blends nature study and outdoor recreation with visual and performing arts. The camp is open to all youth; 4-H members and non-4-H youth are welcome. The camp is designed for youth aged 9 to 14 years old and volunteer teen counselors aged 15 to 18 years old. Check-in Sunday 1:00 p.m. Check-out Wednesday 2:30 p.m. Cost is $140 and registration deadline is July 2. 4-H member scholarships may be available.   • 4-H Dairy Days and Michigan Dairy Expo. July 19–23 at the MSU Pavilion. Open to 4-H and FFA members. Contact Carla McLachlan at mclachl2@msu.edu for details.
  • Ag Expo. July 20–22 at the outdoor exhibit area at Mount Hope Road and Farm Lane on the Michigan State University campus. This event features the latest in farm equipment, products, supplies and services. Open to all. Find out more at http://www.agexpo.msu.edu .

August 2010

  • 4-H Great Lakes and Natural Resources Camp. August 1–7 at Camp Chickagami in Presque Isle County. MSU pre-college program teaches youth about Michigan’s diverse natural resources, Great Lakes ecosystems and outdoor recreation opportunities such as charter fishing, kayaking, sailing and snorkeling. Open to 70 teens who are aged 13 to 15 by July 1, 2010. Cost: 2010 price TBA (2009 cost was $335 for current 4-H members; $345 for those not in 4-H).
