$$$ for college: Scholarship opportunities for 4-H youth

By Laura Allen

Congratulations to the 2009 Michigan State University 4-H Scholarship recipients:

Amanda Freis of Menominee County, Alex Lott of Ingham County, Grant Meyer of Monroe County, Tiffany Rogers of Cass County, Kelly Ryder of Monroe County and Samantha Stechschulte of Shiawassee County submitted scholarship applications during their senior year of high school and were selected from a pool of approximately 100 Michigan 4-H youth. They applied to MSU for admission to a four-year degree program, and after being selected for the scholarship and accepted to MSU, they are eligible to receive $2,500 for four successive years of full-time study at MSU (a $10,000 value)!

Six recipients are selected annually based on their 4-H involvement, achievements, leadership, service and academic excellence. To learn more, get deadline information and to download the application form, go to the Michigan 4-H Scholarship web page at http://web1.msue.msu.edu/4h/scholar.html.

Getting a head start on college tuition

Congratulations to the 4-H youth who applied and were selected for a $2,000 Pre-College Achievement Scholarship (PAS). The recipients attended a 2008 MSU pre-college summer program (either 4-H Exploration Days or 4-H Great Lakes and Natural Resources Camp) the summer after their 8th-grade year. The PAS will be applied toward the student's first year at MSU as a degree-seeking student. Scholarship recipients are not guaranteed admission to MSU and are expected to meet admission requirements upon applying to MSU for admission. Of the 61 scholarships awarded, 57 (93 percent) went to 4-H youth!
