Michigan 4-H Foundation names Langston as executive director
By Cheryl Howell

Terry Langston, of Ovid, is the sixth executive director of the Michigan 4-H Foundation.Terry Langston, of Ovid, was named executive director of the Michigan 4-H Foundation, effective August 5, 2002. Langston succeeds Donald R. Jost, of Holt, who led the $8.5 million foundation for the past 25 years.

Jost remains on the foundation’s staff to provide optimal transition between leadership. He will serve as the foundation’s senior director of program and management services.

Langston comes to the foundation after serving as development officer for corporate and foundation relations and director with student development and youth outreach services at Olivet College in Olivet.

As the sixth executive director of the Michigan 4-H Foundation, Langston will be responsible for progressive financial and administrative management.

The foundation’s executive director is also responsible for the solicitation, management and distribution of private gifts and grants to support the work of Michigan 4-H Youth Development. This work is accomplished with a $2.5 million annual budget, a 30-member volunteer board of trustees and 40 employees located at its East Lansing headquarters and at Kettunen Center, near Tustin, which the foundation owns.

The foundation’s executive director is an employee of Michigan State University Extension and works as a collaborative member of the state 4-H programming staff.

"Terry comes to us with a passion for youth development and a strong commitment to link support for program and continual learning for youth in citizenship, leadership and understanding of philanthropy,” said Cheryl Booth, state 4-H leader and interim associate director of MSU Extension.

Langston received his bachelor’s degree in social relations and family studies and his master’s degree in community service and family studies from Michigan State University. He has worked in a variety of community initiatives to promote positive youth development, including serving as a volunteer member of the Eaton County Community Foundation and working with the Council of Michigan Foundations to develop the structure for youth advisory councils that support youth philanthropy throughout Michigan. He was also a 4-H member in Calhoun County.

"The Michigan 4-H Foundation’s executive director embodies the commitment of the foundation’s board of trustees to work in partnership with Michigan State University to provide opportunities for Michigan young people to succeed through 4-H,” said Pamala R. Babbitt, foundation president. “Terry Langston represents the success of our 50-year partnership, and we are pleased to have him join us as the new leader of the Michigan 4-H Foundation."

Cheryl Howell is the 4-H information officer at Michigan State University.
