Come
to 4-H Capitol Experience and see government
in action
By Judy Ratkos
Experience
state government in the making at 4-H Capitol Experience,
March 16 to 19, 2003, in Lansing. You’ll get hands-on
experience in civic responsibility and public policy.
This
event gives Michigan teens a chance to learn how state government
works by examining a current issue of their choice from
several points of view. Juvenile crime, wildlife management
and education are just a few of the issues teens have the
chance to explore. Participants meet with legislators, community
organization personnel, lobbyists, representatives of executive
branch agencies, legislative aides and others to learn how
different interests fit together and why it’s important
to get involved.
Teens
and chaperones will engage in fun, interesting simulations
and activities designed to reinforce and apply what they’ve
learned about government, and they’ll participate
in mentorships with people who work in government-related
fields. After the event, 4-H’ers share their learning
experiences with others and are better prepared to facilitate
change in their communities.
“I
learned so much! This program convinced me to get involved
in our government,” said a participant last year.
4-H
Capitol Experience is open to 4-H teens in high school and
to adult chaperons. Registration materials will be available
through county MSU Extension offices in late October. The
application deadline is January 31, 2003.
