To conduct educational and research programs
designed to maintain and enhance the contributions of the Christmas tree industry
to Michigan's economy.
Objectives
Have Christmas trees recognized as a "viable
commodity" across MSU in appropriate departments and support services.
Maintain Michigan as a major Christmas tree
producing state with national visibility and stature.
To help growers produce higher quality trees
more efficiently by adopting more intensive management practices. These include:
evaluating, improved soil preparation and fertilization, planting stock and
new tree species (true firs), cultural practices, pest management, and different
shearing practices/techniques. These higher management practices should help
to shorten the production period and increase profitability for the grower.
Establish and maintain a complete database
of all information relative to Christmas tree production in Michigan.
