Each year some 35 plus million natural Christmas trees are used by American consumers. Nearly all Christmas trees used in the United States are produced in plantations - plantings of specific conifer species established and managed for the sole purpose of producing Christmas trees. An estimated 50 million trees are planted annually with the objective of managing them to specifically produce Christmas trees.
Since the middle part of the last century Michigan has been among the leading states in Christmas tree production. A favorable climate, abundance of favorable planting sites and soils, and a somewhat centralized location combine to produce conditions favorable to the intensive culture of several different conifers. Although yearly production has declined from the 6 million trees harvested annually in the late 1980's, nearly 4 million trees continue to be harvested each year by some 1000 producers located in several areas of the state.
