Huron County Youth Wins Award for Volunteerism

Linda Schumacker

Rebecca Nesbit, 16, of Bad Axe received a Distinguished Finalist medallion in the 2006 Prudential Spirit of Community Awards, a national program honoring young people for outstanding volunteerism. Nesbit was one of the top eight Michigan youths honored.

An exemplary role model for her peers, Nesbit qualified for the President’s Volunteer Service Award, which recognizes Americans of all ages who have volunteered significant amounts of their time to serve their communities and their country.

Nesbit is a member of Rabbit Raisers 4-H Club and a junior at North Huron High School. She created “Becca’s Busy Box” containing craft kits, books, games and movies for hospitalized children.

After receiving approval from Huron Medical Center officials, Rebecca recruited help and organized a campaign to solicit donations, distributed collection containers to local businesses and delivered completed boxes to the medical center.

The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards honor middle and high school students for outstanding volunteer service. It is the largest youth recognition program based solely on volunteering in the U.S.

The Huron County 4-H Program is very proud of Rebecca’s great accomplishment in achieving this prestigious award!
