SW MI Delegation Experiences Citizenship Washington Focus

Jim Weaver

Representing Southwest Michigan, 42 teens and seven adults journeyed to Citizenship Washington Focus (CWF) June 10-17. Delegates represented Barry, Berrien, Branch, Cass, Hillsdale, Jackson, Kalamazoo, Lapeer, St. Joseph and Van Buren Counties.

What famous generals fought at the Battle of Gettysburg? Why was the Battle of Gettysburg so unique ? Who is the congressman or congresswoman representing you in Washington, D.C.? How does CWF impact us at home? With an overnight stay and tour of the Gettysburg Battlefield, this trip affected each delegate in a different way while creating valuable memories and friendships.

CWF is a week-long 4-H citizenship program for youth ages 14-19. Thousands of young people from across America stay at the National 4-H Youth Conference Center near Washington, D.C. to participate in the program, which provides opportunities for young people to:

  • Broaden appreciation and practice respect for themselves and others;
  • Increase individual commitment to citizen involvement;
  • Understand the importance of civic/social responsibilities;
  • Practice fitness and have fun!

CWF participants get:

  • A behind-the-scenes look at the capital and the chance to meet members of congress;
  • Motivational speakers, workshops and assemblies that increase individual commitment to citizen involvement and build lifetime skills for success;
  • An enthusiastic college-age staff that works directly with them.

CWF program assistants immerse delegates in the culture and history of Washington, DC, through onsite workshops at its most spectacular sights. Highlights of our trip included:

  • Washington, D.C. at night
  • Capitol Hill and the Capitol Building
  • Mount Vernon – President George Washington’s home
  • Arlington National Cemetery
  • Patriotic military presentation entitled Twilight Tattoo
  • Presidential and war monuments and memorials galore
  • Smithsonian museums

The trip for 2007 is already being planned. Trip dates are not confirmed, but will fall in mid-to-late-June. Cost per delegate will be $950 (most participating counties provide partial scholarships).
