4-H Events & Workshops

The following is a list of state and regional 4-H events scheduled from October 2006 to September 2007. The listing includes what the event is, when and where it will be held, who is eligible to attend and the deadline for registrations to arrive. The information was accurate as this issue went to press. Unless otherwise indicated, check with your county 4-H staff for your county registration deadlines and other details.

October 2006

  • National 4-H Week. October 1-7. http://www.national4-hheadquarters.gov/.
  • Fall Horse Galaxy for State 4-H Horse Event Committees. October 6-7 at Kettunen Center. Open to adult and teen state 4-H horse event planning committee members (invitation only).
  • 4-H Visual Arts & Crafts Workshop. October 7-8 at Kettunen Center. Open to adult and teen volunteers aged 13 and up. Register by September 22, 2006.
  • Michigan 4-H Youth Conservation Council. Application deadline: October 13. Open to youth ages 13 to 19. http://web1.msue.msu.edu/cyf/youth/m4hycc.html.
  • 4-H Clothing & Textiles Workshop. October 14-15 at Kettunen Center. Open to adult and teen volunteers aged 13 and up. Register by September 29, 2006.
  • 4-H Goat Volunteer Leaders Workshop. October 20-22 at Kettunen Center. Open to adult and teen volunteers aged 13 and up. Register by October 6, 2006.
  • 4-H Proud Equestrians Program Instructor Update. October 28-29 at Kellogg Biological Station. Attendance is required at either the fall 2006 or winter 2007 session to maintain 4-H PEP instructor status. Open to 4-H PEP instructors or instructors in training, and to NARHA-certified instructors and those with an interest in therapeutic riding.

November 2006

  • 4-H Teen Horse Volunteer Leaders Conference 1. November 17-18 at Kettunen Center. Open to 4-H horse project teen leaders (aged 14-19) and adult chaperones.
  • 4-H Teen Horse Volunteer Leaders Conference 2. November 18-19 at Kettunen Center (see above).
  • MSU Extension’s 4-H Youth at the Lady Spartan Basketball Game. November 19 at the Breslin Center at MSU. Open to 4-H youth and their families, 4-H volunteers, and MSU Extension staff members and their families. Contact Pat Talbot at talbotp@msu.edu for more information.

December 2006

January 2007

  • 4-H Horse Judges & Superintendents Conference. January 6-7 at Kettunen Center. Open to Michigan 4-H horse project regular and conditional judges, Extension staff, 4-H horse judges advisory committee members, State 4-H Horse Show committee members, and one horse superintendent or show manager per county. Adults aged 19 and up only. Contact Karen Waite at kwaite@msu.edu for details.
  • 4-H Tune Up Time. January 12-13 at Kettunen Center. Tune up your local or county 4-H program at this workshop. Open to adult volunteers and Extension 4-H staff.
  • 4-H Peer Plus & Speak Out for Military Kids Workshop. January 19-21 at Kettunen Center. Open to teens and adults age 14 and up.
  • 4-H Teen Citizenship, Leadership & Service Conference. January 27-28 at Kettunen Center. Open to 4-H’ers and non-4-H’ers age 14 and up and to adults.
  • Block and Bridle Little International. January 27 at the MSU Pavilion. Open to the public. Contact Carla McLachlan at mclachl2@msu.edu for details.

  • State 4-H Rabbit & Cavy Show. January 27 at the MSU Pavilion. Open to participants aged 9 to 19; spectators welcome.

February 2007

  • Michigan 4-H Communications Day. February date to be announced at MSU. Open to participants aged 9 to 19; spectators welcome. Contact your county 4-H staff or visit http://www.canr.msu.edu/anscikids/ for details.
  • MQHA/MI 4-H Horse Benefit Clinic. February 3 at the MSU Pavilion. Open to all.

  • Agriculture & Natural Resources (ANR) Week. March 2-10 at MSU. Open to all. Contact your county MSU Extension office for details or find out more at http://www.canr.msu.edu/anrweek/.
  • 4-H & FFA Crop-O-Rama. March 7 at MSU Plant and Soil Sciences Building. Open to 4-H and FFA members through age 19.
  • 4-H Family Weekend: Jungle Journey 2007. March 17-18 at Kettunen Center. Designed for and open to families with children aged 5 to 12.
  • 4-H Capitol Experience. March 18-21 in Lansing. Open to 4-H teens aged 15 to 19, and to adult chaperons. Application deadline in January.
  • 4-H Environmental & Outdoor Education Adult & Teen Volunteer Training. March 24-25 at Kettunen Center. Open to adults and youth aged 13 and up. Register by March 9.
  • Spring Fling Horticulture and Entomology Workshop. March 24 at the MSU Plant and Soil Sciences Building.
  • National 4-H Conference. March 24-29. Premier 4-H leadership conference. Teen delegates are selected through an application process (applications due January 10, 2007). Open to teens age 15-19.
  • MI 4-H “Hairy Horse” Clinic/Show. March 25 at the MSU Pavilion. Open to all. Contact Karen Waite at kwaite@msu.edu for details.

April 2007

  • Block & Bridle Youth Livestock Judging Contest. April 15 at the MSU Pavilion. Open to all 4-H and FFA youth. Contact the Block & Bridle Club office at (517) 355-8407 for details. (The office is student run so be prepared to leave a message.)
  • 4-H Rabbit & Cavy Volunteer Workshop. April 14-15 at Kettunen Center. Open to 4-H adult and teen volunteers age 13 and up.
  • State FFA Ag Skills Contests. April 20 at MSU. Open to FFA and 4-H members; spectators welcome. Contact the state FFA office at (517) 353-9221 for details. Register by April 6.
  • Small Animals Day. April 21, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the MSU Pavilion (tentative). Open to all. Contact the MSU College of Agriculture and Natural Resources at (517) 355-9575 after April 1 for details.
  • 4-H Global & Cultural Detectives Workshop. April 21-22 at Kettunen Center. Open to adult and teen 4-H volunteers age 13 and up.
  • Michigan 4 H Dairy Conference. April 27-29 at Bay Shore Camp in Sebewaing. Open to youth aged 12 to 19.
  • 4-H Shooting Sports Volunteer Training Workshop. April 27–29 at Kettunen Center. Open to new and veteran adult volunteers and youth aged 16 and up. Register by April 13.

May 2007

  • Registration deadline for 2007 4-H Challenge Leader Training Series. May 1. Find out more at http://web1.msue.msu.edu/cyf/youth/challenge.html.
  • Envirothon. May 2-4 (tentative) at Camp Cavell near port Huron. Open to groups of three to five high school students with up to four alternates and one adult leader/teacher. Application timeline TBD. www.michiganenvironthon.org.
  • 4-H Volunteer & Teacher Project FISH Workshop. May 18-20 at Kettunen Center. Open to adult volunteers and teachers age 19 and up. Register by May 4.

  • State 4-H Horse Trail Ride. June date to be announced at Goose Creek Trail Camp. Open to all 4-H youth and adult members.
  • Michigan Junior Beef Show & Beef Showcase. June 8-10 at the MSU Pavilion. Open to all youth aged 9 and up. Contact Carla McLachlan at mclachl2@msu.edu or visit http://www.canr.msu.edu/anscikids/ for details.

  • Michigan 4-H Awards Assembly. June 20-21 at MSU. Open to state 4-H award nominees aged 13 and up by January 1, 2007. Register by May 4.
  • 4-H Exploration Days. June 20-22 at MSU. Open to youth aged 11 and up by January 1, 2007 and to adult chaperons. The registration book will be available online at http://web1.msue.msu.edu/cyf/youth/expodays.html and from county MSU Extension offices by mid-March. Register by May 4.
  • 4-H MMPA Milk Marketing Tour. June 27-29 at Novi. Free and open to 4-H dairy project members aged 15 to 19.

July 2007

  • 4-H Learning Science Through the Arts Camp. July 8-11 at Kettunen Center. Open to youth aged 9-14. Register by June 29.
  • State 4-H/FFA Livestock Judging Contest. July 10 at the MSU Pavilion. Open to 4-H and FFA members. Contact Carla McLachlan at mclachl2@msu.edu for details.
  • 4-H Dairy Days and Michigan Dairy Expo. July 16-20 at the MSU Pavilion. Open to 4-H members aged 9 to 19. Contact Carla McLachlan at mclachl2@msu.edu.

  • 4-H Great Lakes & Natural Resources Camp. July 29 to August 4 at Camp Chickagami in Presque Isle County. Open to 70 Michigan teens who are entering 8th -10th grade in fall ’07 and are not older than 16 on July 1, 2007. Register by May 1, 2007. http://www.msue.msu.edu/msue/cyf/youth/glnrc.html.

August 2007

  • 4-H State Shooting Sports Tournament. August date and location to be announced. Open to all 4-H shooting sports members aged 9 to 19 by January 1, 2007; spectators welcome.
  • State 4-H Horse Show. August 10-12 at the MSU Pavilion. Open to selected 4-H county delegates; spectators welcome.
  • Study Plants of the World and Volunteer Opportunity in Puerto Rico. August 10-18 at the Puerto Rico Biosphere in Terras Ajunta and El Yunque Rain Forest. Open to youth ages 15-19. Contact Dixie Sandborn at sandbord@msu.edu for more information.

September 2007

  • 4-H Standardbred Show & Sale. September date and location to be announced. Open to participants in the Michigan 4-H Standardbred project; spectators welcome.
